We Start at the Source

Purpose of the Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is a woman’s core. It includes key muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that house vital organs, including the bladder. As a structure that facilitates essential body functions, such as using the restroom, the pelvic floor serves as one of the most important factors in a woman’s overall health.

The question is, when might a woman need pelvic floor physical therapy?

What Is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy for Women?

Half PT and Half Marriage Counseling

Women are absolutely resilient and deserve to chase their wildest dreams. However, there comes in a time in nearly every woman’s life where her pelvic floor falters – whether it’s due to giving birth, becoming injured, or something else. You may experience hip or back pain, have an uh-oh moment while sneezing, or face low belly pain that is so severe it leaves you bedridden, calling out of work, or canceling plans.

More often than not, these symptoms are signs of a bigger problem – pelvic floor dysfunction. How do you get to the bottom of that problem? One such way is through women’s pelvic floor physical therapy. In Oregon City, we have a comfortable home office where our skilled physical therapist performs a full-body assessment to better understand what you’re facing. Many problems originate from issues with the pelvic floor, so we start there, first identifying and diagnosing the issue. Next, we treat the symptoms and design a custom plan of care to help you live your best life again. After all, you deserve it!

What to Expect at Your Appointment

How It Works

When it comes to women’s pelvic floor physical therapy in Oregon City, symptom relief is our first goal. We start on the pelvic floor and work outward, identifying dysfunctions and resolving them along the way. A big focus for women’s pelvic floor work is strengthening the pelvic floor muscles and the support muscles, such as the hips and belly muscles, to relieve your symptoms in the next few visits.

No two pelvic floor physical therapy appointments are the same. We look at how the body is moving. Then, we find and address any deficits. At our clinic, we practice manual therapy techniques inspired by visceral mobilization, craniosacral therapy, functional mobilization, and other soft tissue work. However, we also teach you exercises and movements that you can do in the comfort of your home to truly improve your pain and function.

At Bottoms Up! PT, we believe in empowering our patients with education so that you feel confident in understanding the issues you are experiencing and the path to resolve them. If you have any questions, we are here for you.

FAQs About Pelvic Floor PT for Women

Is an internal pelvic exam required?

We don’t have to do an internal exam, but we may reach an impasse if we don’t since we won’t get to certain muscles. A vaginal or anorectal exam is the only way to do that. Keep in mind that we never perform this exam on the first visit, and it shouldn’t hurt.

How often should I do pelvic floor physical therapy?

We generally see patients once to twice a week for the first few weeks depending on your level of pain and symptoms. We’ll go from there and decide what works best for you.

Is pelvic floor physical therapy worth it?

We’re sold – pelvic floor physical therapy is well worth it! Our expert pelvic floor therapist in Oregon City can help treat a variety of conditions, including pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, interstitial cystitis, infertility, and many more.

What should I expect after the appointment?

Things sometimes flare up a little before they get better. Not to worry – flares are a normal part of healing, and healing doesn’t happen in a straight line. In addition, it is important to note that the pelvic floor relies on having a range of motion.

Your muscles might not be weak, but you might not be able to use them effectively, and they may need manual therapy. If you go too far, that could affect your stability. We try to find the line and see what needs to happen to stimulate healing. If you are experiencing urinary incontinence due to urgency, we generally recommend drinking more water, and when you do so, you may need to urinate more often than normal for a few days. It’s all part of the process!
