What Is the Pelvic Floor?

It Affects Everything in the Body

The pelvic floor is a vital structure in the body that holds organs such as the bladder, bowel, and prostate. This structure supports healthy urination, defecation, posture, sexual health, and many other functions in the body. If there is an issue with the pelvic floor, your body may experience problems in one of all of these areas, affecting your day-to-day life.

What to Expect During Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

How It Works

Men’s pelvic floor PT is an effective way to help you overcome symptoms such as trouble urinating and difficulty performing. At Bottoms Up! PT, we have a four-stage approach. The first two to three visits are primarily diagnostic, as nothing in the body happens without the pelvic floor’s consent, and the pelvic floor likewise needs the rest of the body to inform its function.

During that time, we’ll assess any influencing systems via a movement screening, anorectal pelvic floor assessment screening, deep core utilization screening, intra-abdominal pressure assessment, and hip strength assessment. However, our plan of care is completely personalized for each and every patient.

After the initial diagnostic visits, we will move onto system relief so you can start living the way you want to. The third stage of treatment includes gait training, lifting mechanics, and balance mechanisms, teaching you how to use your muscles efficiently so that you don’t wind up back in our clinic in six months with the same problem.

“I am a 65 year old woman recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I have a very physical job and I was having a hard time moving my right side. My first visit to Dr Lindsay was miraculous! She has addressed all my issues from previous operations. I had no idea what Scar Tissue could do. At this point I am more pain free and mobile than I have been in years!!”

FAQs About Pelvic Floor PT for Men

Can you fix my slipped disc?

Sometimes we can help a slipped disc un-slip, but most of the time, the disc isn’t the problem. It’s your ability to stabilize. We can definitely teach you how to stabilize the spine so your disc doesn’t get in your way.

Do I have to do the internal anorectal exam?

We can forgo the rectal exam if you simply can’t bring yourself to be comfortable with it. However, we very well may not be able to achieve profound, lasting results without knowing what your pelvic floor is up to, which can only be learned with an internal exam. You’ll be glad to know that many patients’ symptoms are relieved right after an anorectal exam, and even if they aren’t, your body’s response informs how we move forward. Please know that we will take our time and respect your space.

What are the symptoms of a weak pelvic floor in a man?

Symptoms of a weak pelvic floor may include constipation, urinary or fecal incontinence, a frequent urge to urinate, low urine output (dribbling), pain during urination, and low belly pain, among others.
